Carrot2 Build problem

Wei Zhang
Hi,

I ckecked out carrot2 stable source from svn to Eclipse. Then I run build-workbench.xml script to execute build task. However, I got the following problem:

What would I suppose to do?

Thanks!

Hi,

Building Workbench binaries is a little tricky -- you'll find some instructions in:

http://fisheye3.atlassian.com/browse/carrot2/trunk/workbench/README?r=trunk

One key thing here is that until we resolve http://issues.carrot2.org/browse/CARROT-272, you'll need to build against the RCP target platform in version 3.3 (not the newest 3.4).

Out of curiosity -- why would you like to build workbench from trunk on your own? If you need Windows or Linux binaries for trunk, you can download them from our build server:

http://download.carrot2.org/head/ (3.1-dev = trunk)

Cheers,

S.

Re: Carrot2 Build problem

I am trying to work through the process of building the workspace from source on the mac. Some small comment about the README file:
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.3.1.1-200710231652/index.php is no longer available, use http://archive.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.3.2-200802211800/index.php instead

When I try to build (using eclipse 3.3.2) I get this error:

     [java] BUILD FAILED
     [java] [eclipse.generateFeature] Bundle org.carrot2.suites.default:
[java] /users/esmith/sw/eclipse-SDK-3.3.2/plugins/org.eclipse.pde.build_3.3.2.v20071019/scripts/productBuild/productBuild.xml:24: The following error occurred while executing this line:
[java] /users/esmith/sw/eclipse-SDK-3.3.2/plugins/org.eclipse.pde.build_3.3.2.v20071019/scripts/productBuild/productBuild.xml:51: Unable to find feature: org.eclipse.rcp.
     [java]
     [java] Total time: 15 seconds

/Users/esmith/projects/workspace/carrot2/build-workbench.xml:100: The following error occurred while executing this line:
/Users/esmith/projects/workspace/carrot2/build-workbench.xml:28: Java returned: 13

I do seem to have that plugin:
eclipse-SDK-3.3.2$ find . -name org.eclipse.rcp*
./features/org.eclipse.rcp.source_3.3.3.r33x_r20080129-8y8eE9UEUWI6qujeED0xT7bc
./features/org.eclipse.rcp_3.3.3.r33x_r20080129-8y8eE9UEUWI6qujeED0xT7bc

Any ideas?

Hi Eishay,

Building Workbench is some of our grey areas when it comes to documentation. Later today I'll try to update the readme file and move it to the official manual.

One key thing we didn't update in the readme is that versions 3.0.1 and above (including trunk) require RCP 3.4.x to build. You can download the whole 3.4 target platform from:

http://ophelia.cs.put.poznan.pl/~sosinski/target-platform.zip

Cheers,

S.

Re: Carrot2 Build problem

Yes, if you want to build the Workbench, you'll have to prepare Eclipse for
plugin development. It is hell to start with, but it is beyond the scope of our
project to fix it anyhow. On the other hand, if you just need the algorithms and
don't care about the Workbench, the components should (?) compile cleanly... I
have not verified this though.

Yes, if you want to build the Workbench, you'll have to prepare Eclipse for
plugin development. It is hell to start with, but it is beyond the scope of our
project to fix it anyhow.

In fact, if you just want to run Workbench in Eclipse, that's fairly simple:

http://download.carrot2.org/head/manual/#section.advanced-topics.running-in-eclipse.workbench

Should work with pretty much any distribution of Eclipse 3.4.

If you'd like to build a binary distribution:

http://download.carrot2.org/head/manual/#section.advanced-topics.building-from-source-code.workbench

Cheers,

S.

I sustain my point of view -- it may seem simple, when it works, but it's hell
when something doesn't...
